What do the course name and level mean?

IGCSE is an international secondary qualification. In IGCSE Mathematics, Extended includes Core content plus extra topics or depth. This Core/Extended split is not the Computer Science route structure. AS means Advanced Subsidiary and A Level means Advanced Level; A Level has broader and deeper content. Match the subject, specification code and exam year to your school entry.

Who should take Cambridge AS Maths?

Students beginning Cambridge AS mathematics who need stronger algebra, clear calculus foundations and component-specific practice.

Students who can share recent work so practice targets the first uncertain step.

Learners who want guided explanations followed by independent attempts.

Cambridge AS Maths learning plan

A tutoring overview, adapted to your starting point and school or institution requirements. Confirm the specification, entry route and assessment year before selecting exam materials.

Official course information and current requirements ↗

01

Pure mathematics

Connect algebra, coordinate geometry, functions and trigonometry through precise notation and linked examples.

02

Introductory calculus

Interpret a derivative as a rate or gradient and an integral as accumulation, then practise the associated techniques.

03

Statistics where selected

Represent data and uncertainty, explain modelling assumptions and interpret calculated probabilities.

04

Mechanics where selected

Start with a diagram and quantities before using mathematical relationships for motion and forces.

05

Component planning

Use the school’s confirmed combination to determine what is taught and which practice papers are appropriate.

How we work on Cambridge AS Maths

For a curve and a specified point, find the derivative, evaluate the gradient and construct the tangent equation. Check that the line passes through the point.

The next question changes the numbers or conditions so you can check whether the idea transfers to a new situation.

Practice and assessment preparation

1

Confirm the 9709 exam year and component combination with the school; applied options are not interchangeable.

2

Practise complete written solutions and timed component questions, correcting both the method and interpretation.

Teaching plan

  • Start with the course outline, a recent marked task and a question the student finds difficult.
  • Teach one priority concept, then ask the student to explain a related example without copying a solution.
  • Set a short practice task and record the first incorrect step, its correction and a question to retry.
  • Review progress through mixed questions and adjust the pace to demonstrated understanding.

Common questions about Cambridge AS Maths

Choosing lessons and preparing for your first session.

01

Who are these lessons for?

Students beginning Cambridge AS mathematics who need stronger algebra, clear calculus foundations and component-specific practice.

02

What should I send before the introductory session?

Send your course name, topic list, a recent marked task and your assessment date. For an exam course, include the board, specification code and year of entry.

03

Is this a fixed syllabus or a personalised plan?

The topic map is a teaching overview. We agree the exact coverage from your school or institution materials and the gaps shown in your work.

04

How is progress reviewed?

We use a new question to check understanding, review the steps you can explain independently and compare recurring mistakes across practice attempts. The next lesson follows that evidence.
