Papers and exam preparation

Foundation: papers 1F and 2F, targeting grades 1–5. Higher: 1H and 2H, targeting grades 4–9, with grade 3 available.

Each paper lasts 2 hours, carries 100 marks and contributes 50%. Calculators are permitted on both papers.

Both papers can assess the syllabus for the selected tier. Higher includes Foundation knowledge.

Teaching plan

  • I check your specification, school plan and a recent test, then teach a priority gap in the introductory lesson.
  • Each topic moves from a worked example to a question you solve independently and explain in your own words.
  • Homework targets the first incorrect step; an error log helps us revisit methods that need more practice.
  • Once the methods are secure, we combine topics and practise timed questions from the appropriate papers.

The Collins book labelled Specification A (9–1), 4MA1, for examination from 2018 matches this route and covers both tiers. Share your edition and chapter so I can align lessons with your copy.

Is Mathematics A an A Level course?

No. The A identifies Specification A within International GCSE. The book belongs under Pearson Edexcel β†’ International GCSE β†’ Mathematics A (4MA1). International AS and A Level are separate qualifications.
