IB Maths AA vs AI: how to choose your route and level

Compare IB Maths AA and AI at SL and HL. Check university requirements, learning preferences and your exam cohort before choosing a course.

Start with university requirements, then consider how you like to work mathematically. AA and AI are different approaches; SL and HL are different levels within each approach. Choosing AI does not automatically mean choosing an easier course.

What is the difference between AA and AI?

Analysis and Approaches emphasises mathematical structure and analytical reasoning. Applications and Interpretation emphasises modelling and interpreting mathematics in context, with a strong role for technology. Both require mathematical understanding and clear communication.

How should you choose SL or HL?

Make the level decision separately from the AA/AI decision. Ask your teacher to review your algebra, functions and problem-solving foundations using recent work. Then consider the time you can give maths alongside your other Diploma subjects.

Do not rely on a general rule such as β€œall engineering courses require AA HL” or β€œAI closes every science route”. Requirements differ by university, degree and entry year. Check each programme's official admissions page for the accepted route, required level and minimum grade. Save the links and ask admissions directly if the wording is unclear.

A checklist for your course-choice meeting

  1. Write down your possible degrees. Include alternatives if you have not decided yet.
  2. Check actual entry requirements. Record the mathematics route, level, grade and entry year for each option.
  3. Bring recent work. Include an algebra question, an unfamiliar problem and a data-interpretation task. Discuss where you need prompting.
  4. Confirm your school's options. Ask which routes run, what preparation is expected and when changes become difficult.
  5. Plan a review point. Agree what early classwork will show whether the choice is a good fit.

What if you are already struggling on a route?

A low mark alone does not tell you whether to switch. Look at whether the difficulty comes from missing prerequisites, interpreting questions, recording working or keeping up with practice. Discuss those patterns with your teacher before changing a course that may affect your university options.

Check which curriculum applies to your exams

The IB states that updated AA and AI courses begin teaching in August 2027, with first assessment in May 2029. Students assessed before that transition should use the applicable existing course documentation. Ask your school which guide and assessment structure applies to your session; do not mix paper-format advice from different cohorts.
